Kalamkari Sarees

Kalamkari is a type of hand-painted or block-printed cotton or silk fabric that originated in Andhra Pradesh, India. The name "Kalamkari" is derived from the words "kalam" meaning pen and "kari" meaning work, which refers to the use of a pen-like tool called a "kalam" to draw intricate designs on the fabric. Kalamkari sarees are highly prized for their intricate designs, which often depict scenes from Hindu mythology, nature, and folklore. The process of creating a kalamkari saree involves several steps, including preparing the fabric, drawing the design, and applying natural dyes. The fabric is first washed and bleached to remove any impurities, and then treated with a mixture of myrobalan and cow dung to make it more receptive to the dyes. The design is then drawn on the fabric using a kalam or a block, and natural dyes made from plants, roots, and minerals are applied to fill in the design. One of the unique features of kalamkari sarees is that they are reversible, with different designs on each side of the fabric.
